Provenance

This intriguing Mughal court scene depicts Husain Ali Khan and his brothers, collectively known as the Sayyid Brothers, who dominated imperial politics during the turbulent years following the death of Emperor Aurangzeb. Acting as influential kingmakers, the brothers controlled the Mughal government and played a decisive role in the succession of emperors between 1707 and 1719.

Set upon an elegant marble terrace, the composition balances courtly luxury with subtle political tension. The figures are portrayed during a moment of leisure, yet the restrained atmosphere and unusual gray sky hint at the uncertainty surrounding the empire during this period of transition and declining imperial authority.
