Etymology
Provenance
This artwork captures the timeless beauty of Varanasi at daybreak through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus design. The city's stepped ghats, temple shikharas, and riverside pavilions are distilled into a harmonious arrangement of geometric forms, while the rising sun casts its warm glow across the tranquil waters of the Ganges. The composition reflects the quiet stillness that defines the sacred city in the first moments of morning.
For centuries, the ghats of Kashi have been places of prayer, pilgrimage, and spiritual renewal. As dawn breaks over the Ganges, devotees gather along the river to greet the rising sun, perform rituals of purification, and begin the day in reflection. The ascending temple spires symbolise the connection between the earthly and the divine, while the river itself remains a timeless symbol of continuity, devotion, and liberation.
Inspired by the principles of Indo-Bauhaus design, the layered architecture of Varanasi is reimagined through clean geometry, balanced proportions, and simplified planes of colour. Warm ochres, terracotta, sandstone, and deep indigo echo the glow of sunrise upon ancient stone, creating a contemporary interpretation of one of India's most sacred landscapes.
