Etymology
Provenance
This artwork reimagines Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus design. The monumental arch, flanking structures, and distinctive architectural details are distilled into a composition of balanced geometric forms, while the open horizon beyond the gateway evokes its historic relationship with the Arabian Sea. The artwork captures the monument not only as a structure, but as a symbol of arrival, transition, and connection.
Built in 1924, the Gateway of India represents the Indo-Saracenic architectural style, blending Indian, Islamic, and European influences into a distinctive coastal landmark. Positioned along Mumbai’s waterfront, the monument has long stood as a meeting point between land and sea, reflecting the city’s history as a centre of maritime exchange, cultural encounters, and architectural evolution.
Through the principles of Indo-Bauhaus design, the grandeur of the monument is transformed into a study of proportion, rhythm, and structure. The intricacies of sandstone carving and ornamental details are simplified into arches, vertical planes, and geometric compositions, creating a modern interpretation of a historic landmark. A refined palette of sandstone beige, deep indigo, burnt terracotta, and charcoal echoes the natural tones of the monument and its coastal surroundings, bridging architectural heritage with contemporary design.
