Etymology
Provenance
This artwork reimagines the sacred cow through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus design, drawing inspiration from the devotional imagery of Rajasthan’s Pichwai tradition. The graceful white cow is adorned with symbolic elements including the sacred tilak, a golden ceremonial bell, and a lotus motif upon its body. Surrounding architectural and natural elements—a framed archway, blooming lotus flowers, and a radiant golden sun—create a harmonious sacred landscape rooted in Indian artistic heritage.
Within Indian iconography, the cow represents nourishment, purity, abundance, and the nurturing forces of nature. In the devotional traditions of Nathdwara, bovine imagery is closely associated with Krishna’s pastoral world and the sacred landscapes of Braj. The lotus rising from still waters symbolises spiritual awakening and purity, while the golden sun represents life, energy, and cosmic balance.
Through the principles of Indo-Bauhaus design, the intricate ornamentation of traditional Pichwai art is transformed into a study of geometric harmony. The organic form of the cow is expressed through balanced curves, structured planes, and simplified colour fields, creating a contemporary interpretation of a revered Indian symbol. A refined palette of ivory, terracotta, deep indigo, and charcoal bridges the richness of Rajasthani heritage with the elegance of modern minimalism.
