Etymology
Provenance
This artwork captures the expressive energy of Kathak through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus abstraction. The dancer is portrayed mid-spin, inspired by the iconic chakkar movement, where rhythm, balance, and precision converge. The flowing silhouette of the lehenga, the graceful positioning of the arms, and the presence of ghungroos are transformed into a composition of circles, angular planes, and rhythmic geometric forms.
Rooted in the storytelling traditions of northern India, Kathak is a classical dance form celebrated for its intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and dynamic spins. The ghungroos worn by the dancer serve as an extension of movement, transforming every step into a rhythmic expression. Through abstraction, the artwork captures not a single moment of performance, but the continuous flow of movement, music, and emotion that defines this timeless art form.
Inspired by the principles of Bauhaus design, the composition reinterprets the fluidity of classical dance through structured geometry and balanced colour fields. Sweeping circular forms evoke the motion of the spinning dancer, while angular elements create a sense of rhythm and architectural harmony. A sophisticated palette of burnt orange, indigo, cream, charcoal, and brass tones bridges the vibrancy of Indian performing arts with the elegance of contemporary modern design.
