Etymology
Provenance
This artwork draws inspiration from the timeless traditions of Indian monastic art, portraying a serene ascetic in quiet contemplation through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus design. With closed eyes, elongated earlobes, flowing monastic robes, and a radiant halo, the figure is presented with graceful simplicity, while a lotus blossom anchors the composition as a symbol of spiritual awakening.
Inspired by the rock-cut cave monasteries of western India, the composition reflects the ideals of contemplation, detachment, and inner discipline that have shaped India's spiritual traditions for centuries. The elongated earlobes symbolise the renunciation of worldly attachments, while the lotus represents purity, wisdom, and the gradual unfolding of enlightenment. Together, these enduring symbols express a quiet journey towards self-realisation and lasting inner peace.
Through the principles of Indo-Bauhaus design, the fluid forms of ancient sculpture are reinterpreted through harmonious geometry and balanced composition. Circular halos, structured planes, and simplified architectural forms create a contemporary visual language that honours India's monastic heritage. A restrained palette of sandstone, ochre, charcoal, and muted terracotta recalls the natural tones of ancient cave sanctuaries, bringing together timeless spirituality and modern design.
