Etymology
Provenance
This artwork reimagines Jaipur’s iconic Hawa Mahal through the refined visual language of Indo-Bauhaus design. The palace’s distinctive honeycomb façade, composed of hundreds of delicate jharokha windows and arched openings, is transformed into a balanced arrangement of geometric forms. A warm terracotta sun-like orb anchors the composition, complementing the architectural rhythm of the structure below.
Built in 1799 under royal patronage, the Hawa Mahal represents the elegance of Rajput architecture, where beauty and functionality exist in harmony. Its intricate lattice windows were designed to allow airflow through the palace while providing privacy for the royal women observing life and celebrations along the streets of Jaipur. These repeating openings became one of the most recognisable expressions of the city’s architectural identity.
Through the principles of Indo-Bauhaus design, the intricate façade of the Hawa Mahal is distilled into clean arches, structured grids, and simplified geometric planes. The detailed ornamentation of traditional jharokhas is reinterpreted through a modern composition of symmetry, repetition, and balance. A palette of terracotta, desert blush, ochre, and charcoal reflects the sandstone tones of Rajasthan, creating a contemporary tribute to one of India’s most celebrated architectural landmarks.
