Provenance
Kangra Miniature painting developed in the 18th century within the ateliers of the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, evolving from the earlier Basohli and Guler schools under the enlightened patronage of Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch. Rooted in Pahari aesthetics and Vaishnav devotional poetry, the style is celebrated for its lyrical expression of emotion, graceful feminine forms, and serene natural landscapes inspired by the valleys of the lower Himalayas.
Central to the discipline is a meticulous, multi-stage process involving the preparation of handmade paper, the extraction of natural and organic pigments from stones and vegetables, delicate outlining, layered colour application, and embellishment with pure gold. The surface is carefully burnished using a conch shell to achieve luminosity and smoothness, while fine brushes — traditionally made from squirrel hair — enable the rendering of expressive eyes, refined features, and intricate flora. The landscapes of Kangra Valley, with shaded leaves, flowing waters, and distant palace architecture, form an emotional extension of the central theme, often portraying the classical nayika in moments of longing and poetic contemplation.
Recognized for its cultural significance, Kangra Painting was accorded Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2014 as the 214th GI-tagged product of India. This painting has been handcrafted by Ms Poonam of Kangra Valley, continuing a lineage rooted in the refined legacy of Pahari miniature artistry.
