Provenance
Krishna stands at the centre of a group of gopis, the devoted milkmaids of Vraj whose love for him is one of the most celebrated subjects in Indian devotional art. Their adoration, in the theological tradition of Bhakti, is understood as an image of the human soul turned wholly toward the divine.
The painting comes from the Jaipur school of Rajasthan, which developed a distinctive style of Krishna devotional imagery through the 18th and 19th centuries. The Jaipur ateliers worked for court patrons and maintained a tradition of rich colour and formal composition that retained its clarity well into the later period.
Compact in format, the work places its figures close to the picture plane with little depth — a characteristic convention of Rajasthani painting that emphasises the devotional encounter over spatial naturalism.
