The boy Krishna pleads with his foster mother Yashoda for more food, gesturing upward toward the scenes on the rest of the page where his future exploits are depicted: herding cattle, defeating demons, and finally sitting crowned king. The page is from a Sursagar, the great devotional poem of the blind poet Surdas, whose verses on Krishna's childhood became central to the north Indian Bhakti tradition. The original was commissioned for a royal collection in the hill kingdoms of northern India and now hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. This print is the only way to own it.
