Provenance
Krishna reclines on an ornate bed, looking ahead with quiet expectation. Two attendants flank him — one with a fan, the other with a peacock-feather whisk — but he pays them no attention. His gaze is elsewhere: towards Radha, whose arrival he awaits. The moment of waiting, in Indian devotional poetry, is charged with meaning. God's longing for his devotee mirrors the devotee's longing for God.
The scene belongs to the Pahari courts of northern India, which produced a body of Krishna devotional painting of great lyrical intensity across the 17th and 18th centuries. The Pahari style is known for its sensitive rendering of interior states: the tilt of a figure, the quality of light, the arrangement of fabric all carry emotional weight.
The composition places Krishna at the centre against a canopied architectural setting, with the attendants' presence emphasising, by contrast, how entirely he is absorbed in something beyond the room.
