Provenance
After the raising of Mount Govardhan, Krishna turns to the world of play — here, to the Yamuna River, where he and three milkmaids enjoy the water under a scorching sun. Their clothes are stacked neatly on a nearby tree. One woman turns her face away as Krishna splashes her. The moment is light and intimate, balanced between the devotional and the earthly.
The scene belongs to the beloved cluster of Krishna's Vrindavan stories — the episodes of childhood and youth that Pahari painters returned to again and again. Working around 1770, the artist renders the Yamuna with characteristic attention: the water active, the figures set against it with the careful placement of a school that understood how to make a small surface hold.
