Provenance
The image is elemental: the infant Krishna, captivated by the moon's reflection in water, reaches toward it with the uncomplicated desire of a child who does not yet know what is and isn't within reach. It is one of the quiet scenes of Krishna's early life — the ones that sit between miracle and ordinariness, where divinity is present but not announced.
This painting belongs to the late phase of Pahari miniature production, around 1820, when the hill kingdoms were adapting their visual language to changing patronage and taste. The composition retains the warmth and intimacy characteristic of Pahari depictions of Krishna's childhood.
