Provenance
Ladakh Thangka painting developed within the monastic ateliers of the Himalayan region, shaped by Tibetan Buddhist artistic canons and preserved for centuries across the monasteries of Ladakh. These sacred paintings were created as visual scriptures, serving meditation, ritual practice, and spiritual instruction rather than decorative purposes.
The tradition is governed by the scientific discipline of Iconometry — a precise system of canonical measurements derived from Buddhist texts. Each deity’s posture, gesture, facial expression, and symbolic attributes are constructed according to proportional grids to ensure spiritual authenticity and iconographic accuracy. Natural mineral and vegetable pigments are carefully layered onto cloth or handmade paper, producing luminous surfaces that embody philosophical meaning and devotional depth.
Practiced across Ladakh and parts of Himachal Pradesh, the art continues through dedicated artisans who preserve its canonical integrity. This painting has been handcrafted by Shri Tsering of Ladakh, continuing a lineage rooted in Himalayan monastic artistry.
