Etymology
Provenance
Ladakh Thangka painting developed within the monastic ateliers of the Himalayan region, shaped by Tibetan Buddhist artistic canons and preserved for centuries across the monasteries of Ladakh. These sacred paintings were conceived as visual scriptures, guiding meditation, ritual observance, and spiritual study rather than serving decorative purposes.
The tradition is governed by the scientific discipline of Iconometry — a precise canonical system of measurement derived from Buddhist texts. Every detail, from the deity’s posture and mudra to facial proportion and symbolic attributes, is constructed according to sacred grids to ensure spiritual authenticity and iconographic accuracy. Natural mineral and vegetable pigments are meticulously layered onto cloth or handmade paper, creating luminous surfaces that embody philosophical meaning and devotional depth.
Practiced across Ladakh and parts of Himachal Pradesh, the art continues through dedicated artisans committed to preserving its canonical integrity. This painting has been handcrafted by Shri Tsering of Ladakh, continuing a lineage rooted in Himalayan monastic artistry.
