Etymology
Provenance:
Ladakh Thangka painting originates from the sacred Himalayan Buddhist tradition practiced across the monasteries of Ladakh and historically shaped by Tibetan monastic ateliers. For centuries, these scroll paintings have functioned as visual scriptures — meditative tools designed to guide contemplation, teaching, and ritual practice.
Each Thangka follows the scientific discipline of Iconometry, a canonical system of measurement derived from Buddhist texts. This precise proportional grid ensures that every deity is rendered with spiritual and symbolic accuracy. The belief is that adherence to these sacred measurements allows the divine presence of the figure to be properly invoked within the artwork.
Practiced across Ladakh and parts of Himachal Pradesh, authentic Ladakhi Thangkas preserve devotional integrity and iconographic precision in contrast to commercial adaptations.
This artwork is painted by Shri Tsering, continuing the lineage of Ladakhi Thangka atelier practice rooted in sacred Himalayan craftsmanship.
