Etymology

“Thangka” derives from the Tibetan word thang-yig, meaning “written scroll” or “recorded message.” Traditionally mounted on textile brocade, a Thangka serves as a portable sacred painting used for meditation, teaching, and ritual contemplation.

“Shakyamuni” translates to “Sage of the Shakya Clan,” referring to Siddhartha Gautama — the historical Buddha who attained enlightenment and revealed the path to liberation.
In iconography, Shakyamuni represents enlightenment, renunciation, wisdom, and compassion.
