Provenance
In Indian astrological tradition, each planet is personified as a deity whose disposition at a birth or ceremony shapes its character. Here, Mars — the planet of war and force — appears as a warrior with green skin, mounted on a tiger crossing the sky, his bearing both martial and celestial.
This leaf comes from an astrology series made in Mandi around 1810, attributed to the painter Sanju. The series personifies the navagraha — the nine planetary bodies — as court figures drawn from Indian iconographic tradition. Sanju’s handling is assured: palette cool and clear, the tiger given expressiveness against a minimal ground, the whole composition striking a balance between the diagrammatic and the vivid.
