Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Mayur Vriksha continues a storytelling tradition where nature is both subject and sacred presence. The Pardhan Gonds, historically revered as hereditary storytellers, translate oral folklore and devotional narratives into intricate visual compositions layered with rhythmic dots and flowing lines.
In Gond art, trees are not merely botanical forms — they symbolize life, continuity, and the cosmic axis connecting earth and sky. Birds, especially peacocks, represent beauty, vitality, and seasonal renewal. Through vibrant colour and meticulous dot-and-line detailing, the artist animates the tree into a living ecosystem where each bird becomes a leaf, each pattern a pulse of life.
This art form gained national recognition through the pioneering work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose early paintings were championed by the modernist painter Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, Gond painting holds Geographical Indication status (GI No. 701, awarded 2022) and stands as the 439th registered GI product of India.
