Provenance
Blue, ivory, and gold — the palette of the finest Iznik tiles, of Mughal pietra dura inlay, of the great blue and white traditions that moved between China, the Islamic world, and Persia over five centuries of exchange. Neelofar fills its field entirely with this palette in a dense all-over floral composition — the blue dominant, the ivory providing the light that keeps the composition from closing in on itself, the gold present in the ornament as the accent that warms the cool field toward richness.
Woven by hand in Uttar Pradesh using Silk Wool Blend, Neelofar draws on the great blue carpet tradition — the tradition of Herati blue ground, of Kashan midnight, of the finest Safavid workshop production where blue was the most prized carpet ground. In Silk Wool Blend, blue achieves a depth and range that the natural dyes of the traditional workshops could produce only at great expense. The ivory botanical ornament against the blue ground achieves its maximum luminosity; the gold accent lifts each motif from pattern to jewel.
Neelofar is for rooms that want depth and the authority of blue. Against warm walls of terracotta or amber plaster, the blue creates a counterpoint of cool richness.
