Etymology
Provenance
Mysore painting traces its lineage to the royal ateliers of South India, evolving after the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century. Master artists migrated toward Mysore and Tamil regions, where the tradition was refined under the patronage of the Wodeyar dynasty.
The style flourished particularly during the reign of Krishna Raja Wadiyar III, who nurtured a court culture that encouraged sacred, devotional, and refined aesthetic expression. Inspired by the mural traditions of the Ajanta Caves and Badami Caves, Mysore painting developed its distinctive character: fine linear precision, soft facial expressions, delicate relief, and restrained yet luminous gold embellishment.
Recognized under Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 32) and awarded GI status in 2005 as the 26th registered GI product of India, Mysore painting remains protected for its regional authenticity and craftsmanship.
This artwork is painted by Dr. J. D. Raja (National Awardee), continuing the royal atelier tradition.
