MATERIAL AND CARE
Pichwai painting originated in the temple town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan, where artisans created devotional backdrops for Lord Shrinathji, an incarnation of Krishna. Painted on cloth with natural pigments and fine brushwork, each piece was meant to carry the deity’s presence beyond the sanctum. This work depicts Shrinathji borne on a palanquin, a scene layered with cultural symbolism. The palanquin represents divine honor and procession, recalling the temple rituals and festivals where the god was carried in grandeur. Every detail, from the rhythmic patterns to the jewel-like colors, speaks to a living tradition where art is both worship and storytelling.
