Etymology
Provenance
This artwork draws inspiration from one of the most consequential turning points in the Mahabharata: the aftermath of the fateful game of dice that altered the destinies of kingdoms, families, and empires. Rather than depicting the dramatic events of the royal court, the composition focuses on the silent emotional aftermath—a moment when loss ceases to be an event and becomes a lived reality.
In this contemporary interpretation, narrative is distilled into a series of symbolic forms. A solitary, veiled figure emerges as an embodiment of dignity confronted by irreversible fate, evoking the emotional presence of Draupadi while transcending literal portraiture. The figure's obscured face and downward posture suggest resilience under the weight of humiliation, uncertainty, and displacement. Opposite stands a solitary die, rendered not as a gaming object but as a symbol of destiny irrevocably cast.
The composition is divided by a singular crimson line, creating a powerful visual threshold between what was and what must follow. Through its restrained palette of charcoal, stone, ivory, and blood-red accents, the work transforms an epic episode into a timeless meditation on loss, endurance, and the moment a life crosses into exile.
