Provenance
The emperor Aurangzeb appears at the jharokha window of his palace — the formal balcony where Mughal rulers showed themselves to their subjects as an act of governance and divine sanction. A carpet draped over the railing marks the site; his halo signals divine grace. He appears aged and settled, holding a string of prayer beads in keeping with the devout religiosity that defined his long reign.
This small portrait would have been gifted by the emperor to a loyal courtier or supporter. Imperial gifting portraits were a central instrument of Mughal statecraft: to receive the emperor's likeness was to receive his favour, and the act of giving created bonds of obligation and devotion across the court network.
Aurangzeb was the last of the great Mughal emperors, ruling from 1658 to 1707. His court continued the tradition of portraiture with precision and restraint. The intimacy of the original — barely 3 inches tall — is part of its purpose: something precious, held close.
