Provenance
This distinguished Mughal portrait depicts Raja Jagat Singh of Nurpur, a prince from the western Himalayan foothills who was raised at the imperial court of Emperor Jahangir and Empress Nur Jahan. Created around 1619, the painting likely commemorates his elevation to princely rank, a significant honor for a ruler from the hill states, few of whom held positions within the Mughal court.
Attributed to the celebrated court painter Bichitr, the work exemplifies the refinement of Mughal portraiture during Jahangir's reign. Jagat Singh is presented with the dignity and composure reserved for imperial nobles, reflecting both his status and his close relationship with the emperor and empress. The portrait stands as a rare record of the political and cultural connections between the Mughal Empire and the Himalayan kingdoms.
