Provenance
A woman reclines against a large bolster at a window, engrossed in her hookah — its body wrought in gold and porcelain, its smoke a signal of stillness, of a moment claimed entirely for itself. She is dressed in a translucent lilac blouse and gold trousers, her jewels comprising pearls, gold, and emeralds. The original work used beetle-wing carapaces for the emerald tones — an embedded material luxury that this print carries forward as colour.
This is a portrait of interior court life: unhurried, privately observed, attentive to surface and sensation. Painted around 1760 in the Pahari kingdoms, it may have been intended as a gift to a king — a painting offered as itself a form of refined attention.
