Provenance
The balcony is a recurring setting in Pahari depictions of Radha and Krishna — a liminal space between the public world of the court and the private world of the lovers, elevated but enclosed, intimate but architecturally framed. Here the two figures are together, which in the visual grammar of the Radha-Krishna narrative is its own form of resolution: the longing, separation, and longing again have a counterweight in these moments of nearness.
The painting is characteristic of the Pahari school around 1760 — a period of considerable refinement in hill kingdom patronage, the compositions carefully balanced, the palette jewelled, the feeling held at a point between ardour and calm.
