Provenance
Dilip Singh of Guler — who reigned from 1695 to 1741 — is shown on a dais, holding a manuscript with alternating red and black lines that may record a sacred text or his devotion to Vishnu, whose mark appears on his forehead. This is the raja who began the practice of commissioning paintings and manuscripts for the Guler royal collection, a patronage tradition that would produce some of the finest work in the Pahari canon.
The Guler school is considered one of the most accomplished of the Pahari kingdoms — its artists bringing a naturalistic refinement to figures and landscape that set it apart from the more formalised styles of other hill courts.
