Provenance
Raja Hari Sen of Mandi is depicted here in the dress of a Mughal court contemporary — a gheradar jama cinched with a short pataka, and a Jahangir-style turban already out of fashion at the centre when this portrait was made. The detail is telling: at the Pahari hill courts, Mughal style carried prestige long after it had moved on at the source. His left hand rests on a sword in a mauve sheath; his right reaches toward the dagger at his belt. The pose is composed and assured, the backdrop a flat fern green, the figure held against it with careful outline.
The Mandi school produced some of the most formally precise portraiture of the Pahari kingdoms — images conceived as court record as much as art, the figure rendered with a flatness and clarity that gives them an almost heraldic authority.
