Provenance
Painted in 1876 by Raja Ravi Varma, Shakuntala Patralekhana draws inspiration from Abhijnanasakuntalam, the celebrated Sanskrit drama by Kalidasa. The composition portrays Shakuntala, the foster daughter of Sage Kanwa, reclining amidst the tranquility of a forest hermitage as she pens a heartfelt message to King Dushyanta. Eschewing conventional writing materials, she delicately inscribes her words upon a lotus leaf with her fingernail, while her companions Anusuya and Priyamvada bear witness to her tender longing. A gentle fawn resting nearby further enhances the idyllic atmosphere of the hermitage.
Executed in oil on canvas, the painting exemplifies Ravi Varma's pioneering synthesis of European Academic Realism and Indian literary subject matter. Through nuanced expressions, graceful poses, and carefully observed natural details, the artist imbues the scene with emotional intimacy and poetic sensibility. First exhibited at the Madras Fine Arts Exhibition in 1876, Shakuntala Patralekhana garnered widespread acclaim and remains among Ravi Varma's most celebrated depictions of romantic yearning, inspiring several later versions that today reside in prominent museums and private collections.
