Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Rakta Vriksha – Crimson Canopy of Song continues the sacred narrative tradition of the Gond community, where painting is an offering to nature and memory.
Historically, the Pardhan Gonds were hereditary storytellers who carried mythology and ancestral histories through song. In contemporary Gond art, those songs are translated into visual rhythm through intricate dot-and-line compositions. The tree, a recurring cosmological symbol, becomes a living axis of life - its branches sheltering birds rendered in pulsating pattern work.
The art form rose to national prominence through the pioneering practice of Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose work was championed by modernist artist Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, Gond painting carries official Geographical Indication recognition (GI No. 701, awarded 2022), registered as the 439th GI product of India.
