Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Rang Mriga Vana continues the sacred storytelling lineage of the Gond community, where painting serves as devotion, memory, and living cosmology.
Traditionally, the Pardhan Gonds were hereditary storytellers who carried myths and ancestral narratives through song. In contemporary Gond painting, those rhythms unfold visually through intricate dot-and-line compositions. The tree, often seen as a cosmic anchor in Gond iconography, symbolizes life and continuity. At its base, deer - rendered in vivid blue, red, green, yellow, and cyan - embody grace, vitality, and harmony with the forest.
Each deer is animated through pulsating dot-and-line patterning, transforming static form into rhythmic movement. The composition reflects coexistence - earth (deer), growth (tree), and spirit (patterned motion) united in visual balance.
The art form gained national prominence through the pioneering work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose practice was championed by modernist painter Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, Gond painting carries official Geographical Indication recognition (GI No. 701, awarded 2022) and is registered as the 439th GI product of India.
