Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Sahaj Sangati – Harmony in the Canopy continues the sacred storytelling tradition of the Gond community, where painting is both devotion and cultural memory.
The Pardhan Gonds were historically the hereditary storytellers of their tribe, preserving mythology and ancestral narratives through song. In contemporary Gond painting, those rhythms take visual form through intricate dot-and-line compositions. Trees in Gond cosmology symbolize shelter and continuity, while birds represent communication, spirit, and collective life.
In this composition, numerous tiny birds gather across the branches of a flourishing tree. Their small scale and rhythmic placement evoke unity, coexistence, and shared belonging. Through layered dots, fine lines, and flowing curves, each bird becomes part of a larger visual chorus — a community held together by pattern and harmony.
Gond painting gained national prominence through the pioneering work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, supported by modernist painter Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, the art form carries official Geographical Indication recognition (GI No. 701, awarded 2022) and stands as the 439th registered GI product of India.
