Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Deep Sea continues a centuries-old storytelling tradition where painting serves as both devotion and narrative. The Pardhan Gonds, historically revered as the storytellers of the Gond community, translate oral folklore, songs, and myths into intricate visual compositions marked by rhythmic dots and flowing lines.
Gond art is widely recognized for its distinctive “Dot & Line” technique — a meditative patterning style that builds form, texture, and movement. Rather than mere decoration, each mark carries symbolic meaning, reflecting harmony with nature, reverence for flora and fauna, and a worldview rooted in coexistence.
This art form gained national prominence through the pioneering work of Shri Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose early creations brought Gond painting from mud walls to contemporary canvases. Today, artists like Ms. Budhwariya Vyam carry this lineage forward, preserving both its sacred essence and evolving expression. Recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI No. 701, awarded 2022), Gond painting stands as the 439th registered GI product of India.
