At the closing page of a great imperial Mughal album, a sunburst (the shamsa) radiates in gold and lapis lazuli, its geometric centre originally left plain as a symbol of divine light and imperial sanction under Shah Jahan. After Aurangzeb seized the throne in 1658, a portrait of the new emperor was added at the centre, his string of prayer beads marking the devout orthodoxy that would reshape the Mughal court. The original was commissioned for a royal collection in the hill kingdoms of northern India and now hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. This print is the only way to own it.
