Provenance
Shiva sits on a seat of coiled snakes in a rocky, tree-lined landscape, clad in tiger hide, his posture at once austere and composed. The rendering follows conventions established in Chamba painting — a distinctive Pahari school where Shiva appears characteristically in three-quarter view with a white complexion, his figure given a formal stillness that marks the devotional intent of the image.
The mountain setting places him in his proper domain: Kailasha, the high and inhospitable place that is also the still centre of the universe.
