Etymology
Provenance
This Tree of Life composition is rooted in the centuries-old Sikki grass craft tradition of the Mithila region in Bihar, India — a heritage art historically sustained by the women artisans of rural Mithilanchal. Harvested from the wetlands of North Bihar, Sikki grass is prized for its natural golden sheen and pliable strength, qualities that lend themselves to intricate handcrafted detailing.
Traditionally, Sikki craft was used to create utilitarian household objects such as grain storage containers and ceremonial items integral to domestic and ritual life. Over generations, the practice evolved into a decorative and symbolic art form, expanding into toys, jewelry, and eventually narrative and pictorial compositions. In this artwork, the grass is carefully harvested, cleaned, sun-dried, shaved, and occasionally dyed before being shaped and layered onto paper by hand. Munj grass is used as a structural base to provide durability and dimensional stability.
The Tree of Life motif — rendered through flowing stems and clustered forms — represents continuity, renewal, and the interconnected web of existence. The organic textures and geometric precision of the Sikki work reflect both ecological sustainability and the quiet discipline of patient craftsmanship. Recognizing its cultural importance, Sikki Grass Craft was granted Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2007 as the 46th GI-tagged product of India. This piece continues that lineage of eco-conscious artistry, handcrafted in Mithila, Bihar.
