Provenance
This Tree of Life with Peacock artwork is anchored in the traditional Sikki grass craft of the Mithila region in Bihar, India - a heritage practice historically nurtured by the women artisans of rural Mithilanchal. Found in the wetlands and marshy areas of North Bihar, Sikki grass is known for its distinctive golden hue and pliable texture, making it ideal for intricate handcraft.
For centuries, Sikki craft was primarily used to create utilitarian household objects such as grain storage containers and ritual items. Over time, the tradition evolved into a refined decorative art form, expanding into toys, jewelry, and eventually intricate pictorial compositions. In this work, natural Sikki grass is harvested, dried, shaved, and carefully dyed before being shaped and layered onto paper using meticulous hand techniques. Munj grass is often used as a structural base to enhance durability and support detailed patterning.
The composition centers on the Tree of Life - a universal emblem of continuity and interconnected existence - intertwined with the graceful form of the peacock, a symbol of beauty, vitality, and auspiciousness in Indian culture. The organic texture of the grass, combined with geometric precision and flowing branches, reflects both sustainability and patient craftsmanship.
Recognized for its cultural importance, Sikki Grass Craft was conferred Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2007 as the 46th GI-tagged product of India. This piece has been handcrafted by Shri Sooraji of Mithila, Bihar, continuing a lineage of eco-conscious artistry rooted in tradition.
