Etymology

The name Rama derives from the Sanskrit Rāma, meaning “pleasing,” “beautiful,” or “one who brings joy.” Revered as the seventh avatar of Vishnu, Rama is traditionally associated with dharma, virtue, courage, and righteous action. The title's reference to Samsara, the Sanskrit term for the cyclical journey of birth, death, and rebirth, reflects the painting's central image of Rama standing above the turbulent waters of existence.

Provenance

In The Archer Above the Waters, Rama stands upon a solitary lotus leaf in the midst of an immense and turbulent sea, his bow drawn with quiet determination. Around him, armies, celestial beings, devotees, animals, and countless figures emerge from the waters, while the vast, almost empty sky creates a striking sense of stillness around the central figure.

The artwork draws upon the visual language of Indian epic and miniature traditions, transforming the lotus into a symbol of purity and transcendence amid the chaos of existence. The restless waters become a world filled with movement and countless narratives, while Rama remains poised above them, embodying courage, dharma, and unwavering purpose. Faded ochres, antique golds, muted greens, and deep blue waters lend the composition the character of an aged illustrated manuscript.
