Rangoli Art Print – The Eight-Petalled Mandala

This art print is inspired by the classic floral rangoli, the circular designs drawn at doorways and in courtyards for Diwali and other celebrations, built outward from a central flower in concentric rings. Its fourfold structure, with arms reaching to each point of the compass, radiates from an eight-petalled flower at its centre, the lotus of eight petals being a recurring emblem in Indian ornament. Stripped of figuration, the composition relies on balance, repetition and colour to create a sense of stillness.

At the heart of the design, four indigo petals alternate with four rust petals around a small gold centre, with slender ochre points between them. This flower sits within a pale disc, framed by an ochre square set on the diagonal and then by a dark ring. From there the mandala expands in layers: pointed white diamonds reach outward along the four axes, each holding a rust dot; large rust petals with pale almond-shaped openings fill the diagonals; broad indigo arcs sweep around them; and an outer ring of sage half-circles, dark semicircles and stepped indigo blocks forms a scalloped edge. Small stepped rust triangles sit at the four corners, and at the top, bottom and sides, short chains of dots end in gold teardrops. Every element is mirrored, so the design reads the same from any direction, drawing the eye repeatedly back to the flower at its centre.

The palette of indigo, charcoal, sage, rust, burnt orange and ochre is set against a warm parchment ground, with the colours applied as flat, clearly bounded shapes softened by a gentle mottled texture. Thin pale gaps between the forms keep the geometry crisp and give it the look of cut and inlaid pieces. That texture and inlaid effect belong to the original image; the Brahm piece is a made-to-order print that reproduces them on a smooth surface.
