Provenance
In The Tree of Awakening, the artist reimagines the Buddha through the intricate visual language of Indian miniature painting, transforming the sacred tree into a living map of existence. At its centre, the meditative Buddha sits in quiet stillness, while branches unfold into temples, sages, birds, rivers, and celestial landscapes.
The roots descend into darker scenes of earthly life, mortality, struggle, and rebirth, creating a visual passage between the spiritual and material worlds. Rendered in muted ochres, antique golds, terracotta, and deep indigo, the composition evokes the warmth and patina of an illuminated manuscript, while its densely layered details invite the viewer to discover new stories within the larger whole.
Drawing inspiration from Buddhist symbolism and the narrative traditions of Indian miniature art, this work presents enlightenment not as a single moment, but as a state of awareness woven through the entire cycle of existence.
