Provenance
This Tree of Life decor painting draws from the ancient Pattachitra tradition of Odisha, a sacred art form that flourished in the 12th century alongside the construction of the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri. Rooted in devotional storytelling and Vaishnava philosophy, Pattachitra paintings historically served as visual scriptures, translating mythological and spiritual concepts into disciplined, symbolic compositions.
Traditionally painted on treated cloth known as patta, the surface is prepared by layering fabric with tamarind-seed adhesive and rice paste, then polished to achieve a smooth and durable base. In this contemporary decor adaptation, fine Tussar silk is used as the canvas. Organic and natural pigments derived from flowers, leaves, fruits, and minerals are applied using bold, clean, and angular linework characteristic of Odisha’s classical aesthetic. Ornate borders, floral scrolls, and rhythmic motifs echo the influence of Odissi and Gotipua traditions, preserving the visual cadence of temple art.
The Tree of Life motif symbolizes the cosmic axis — roots grounded in the earthly realm and branches ascending toward the heavens — expressing origin, continuity, and renewal. In Indian symbolism, it represents harmony between nature and the cosmos, embodying balance, prosperity, and spiritual order. Recognized for its cultural significance, Odisha Pattachitra received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008 as the 70th GI-tagged product of India. This artwork has been handcrafted by Prasanna Nayak, sustaining a centuries-old artistic lineage within a refined contemporary interior format.
