Etymology
Provenance
This Tree of Life painting originates from the classical Pattachitra tradition of Odisha, a lineage that flourished in the 12th century alongside the construction of the sacred Jagannath Temple. The devotional culture surrounding Lord Jagannath fostered a vibrant artistic movement in which painted cloth scrolls (patta) were used to narrate mythological stories and spread spiritual teachings across the region.
Rooted in disciplined craftsmanship, Pattachitra artists prepare the canvas by layering cloth with tamarind-seed adhesive and rice paste to create a durable, polished surface. In contemporary adaptations such as this piece, fine Tussar silk serves as the base. Natural pigments extracted from flowers, leaves, fruits, and roots are applied using controlled, bold linework and intricate detailing. The stylized motifs and ornamental borders reflect influences from Odissi and Gotipua dance traditions, translating rhythm and movement into visual form.
The Tree of Life motif symbolizes the cosmic axis — roots anchored in the earthly realm and branches extending toward the heavens — expressing continuity, growth, and spiritual balance. Recognized for its cultural significance, Odisha Pattachitra received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008 as the 70th GI-tagged product of India. This artwork has been handcrafted by Prasanna Nayak, preserving a sacred artistic heritage within a contemporary decorative context.
