Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Tree of Melodic Wings continues the sacred storytelling lineage of the Gond community, where painting is not merely decorative but devotional. Traditionally, the Pardhan Gonds served as hereditary storytellers, carrying myth, ancestry, and cosmology through oral song. Today, those rhythms find visual expression through intricate dot-and-line compositions.
In this tradition, trees are living cosmologies - shelters of birds, symbols of sustenance, and metaphors for interconnected existence. The patterned birds resting within the branches are not static figures but rhythmic presences, animated through meticulous layering of dots, curves, and flowing lines. Each motif pulses with vitality, echoing a worldview rooted in coexistence and reverence for the natural world.
Gond painting entered the national art discourse through the pioneering work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose visionary practice was supported by modernist artist Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, the art form holds official Geographical Indication recognition (GI No. 701, awarded 2022) and is registered as the 439th GI product of India.
