A woman waits alone for a lover who has not come. Around her, every bird and animal appears in pairs, and the contrast makes her solitude feel even heavier. The painting comes from the nayika tradition, which catalogued the emotional states of women in love and was celebrated across the northern Indian courts. The original was commissioned for a royal collection in the hill kingdoms of northern India and now hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. This print is the only way to own it.
