Etymology
Provenance
Originating from the indigenous Gond community of Madhya Pradesh, this artwork continues a tradition where painting is both storytelling and spiritual expression. The Pardhan Gonds, historically revered as the narrators of oral lore, transformed songs, myths, and ancestral wisdom into visual compositions defined by intricate dot-and-line techniques.
Gond painting is deeply rooted in the philosophy of harmony with nature. Created traditionally on mud walls during rituals and festivals, the art evolved onto paper and canvas while preserving its meditative pattern work — dots, fine lines, dashes, and flowing curves that generate movement and life within form.
The tradition gained national recognition through the pioneering efforts of Jangarh Singh Shyam, bringing Gond art into contemporary spaces while maintaining its devotional core. Recognized with Geographical Indication status in 2022 (GI No. 701), Gond painting stands as the 439th registered GI product of India — a living heritage form with ancient lineage.
