Provenance
The Vasakasajja Nayika - the heroine who makes herself ready - is shown in the act of preparation: adorning herself, arranging her surroundings, in anticipation of her lover's arrival. A pair of deer are placed in the composition to sharpen the contrast of her solitude, a visual grammar typical of Pahari nayika imagery where the natural world mirrors and accentuates the emotional state of the figure.
This leaf comes from the Nurpur Rasikapriya - an illustrated version of Keshav Das's 16th-century treatise on the poetics of love, produced at the Nurpur court around 1750. The Rasikapriya classified heroines and heroes by their emotional dispositions, giving Pahari painters a structured vocabulary for rendering interior states through pose, setting, and symbolic detail.
