Etymology
Provenance
'Ivory, Blue and Flame' sets three of the most vivid blooms in BRAHM's Vedic Flora series side by side: 'Kumuda', the white water lily, 'Pushkara', the blue water lily, and 'Parna Palasha', the flame-orange blossom branch. Each is composed as a botanical study on a parchment-toned ground, with detail studies set around the plant and the Sanskrit name lettered in Devanagari below, with the Atharvaveda reference printed on the plate: 4.34.5 for Kumuda, 12.1.24 for Pushkara and 3.5 for Parna Palasha. The two water lilies make a natural pair, and the palasha adds a warm, bright counterpoint.
In 'Kumuda', three open white water lilies with layered, pointed petals and golden-orange stamens sit among round, dark-green leaves with reddish-brown undersides, above a knotted rhizome. 'Pushkara' holds two open blue and lilac water lilies around golden stamens, with a closed bud between them and broad, rounded leaves below. In 'Parna Palasha', curved flame-orange petals unfurl from dark, velvety buds in three dense clusters along a bare, knotted branch among rounded, grey-green leaves.
Ivory, blue-violet and vermilion carry the three plates, linked by the golden centres of the lilies and the gold-orange of the palasha, with green, rust-red and sage leaves on the shared ochre-cream parchment. Fine pen lines trace every petal and leaf vein, and the faint mottling of the ground is visible in the images themselves. The meeting of cool and warm blooms suits a living room, an entrance hall or a dining-room wall.
