Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Vriksha Leela continues a centuries-old storytelling lineage where painting becomes both devotion and narrative expression. The Pardhan Gonds, traditionally the hereditary storytellers of the Gond community, transform oral songs, myths, and ancestral memory into visual compositions woven through rhythmic dots and flowing lines.
Gond art is distinguished by its meditative “Dot & Line” technique — a layered patterning system that builds movement, texture, and life within each form. Trees, animals, and natural elements are not rendered as static objects but as living presences, animated through repetition and intricate detailing. Each mark symbolizes harmony with nature, ecological reverence, and the belief that all life is interconnected.
The contemporary recognition of Gond painting emerged through the pioneering vision of Shri Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose early works brought this tribal expression from earthen walls into the sphere of modern Indian art. Today, artists like Ms. Budhwariya Vyam sustain and evolve this tradition, preserving its sacred ethos while shaping its contemporary identity. Recognized with Geographical Indication status (GI No. 701, awarded 2022), Gond painting stands as the 439th registered GI product of India.
