Provenance
Mysore rosewood inlay emerged in the early 19th century under royal patronage in the princely state of Mysore. The craft’s refinement can be seen in historic structures such as the inlaid doors of Mysore Palace and the mausoleum at Srirangapatna from the era of Tipu Sultan.
The process involves carving dense rosewood to form precise recesses, into which lighter woods and coloured inlay are meticulously fitted by hand. Each element is individually shaped and placed, requiring years of training to achieve harmony and seamless integration.
The tradition gained international recognition with a Gold Medal at the British Empire Exhibition in 1914 and received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2006 (GI No. 24), safeguarding its authenticity. This piece has been handcrafted by Shri Bharath of Mysore, continuing a lineage rooted in royal workshops.
